Sometimes your skin needs a little help looking refreshed, especially as you age. Platelet-rich fibrin, or PRF, is a natural treatment option that uses components from your own blood to help improve the look of thinning, dull, and wrinkled skin. The result is a refreshed look that still feels like you.
What Is Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) and How Does It Work?
Platelet-rich fibrin is a concentrated portion of the blood that contains platelets, white blood cells, and growth factors. These components are involved in the body’s natural renewal response.
What makes PRF unique is its fibrin matrix. This works like scaffolding to help hold the platelets and growth factors together, which lets them release more gradually into the skin over time to stimulate your own collagen production.
What Can PRF Help With?
PRF can be used to reduce the appearance of:
- Fine lines
- Crepey skin
- Dull-looking skin
- Tired-looking eyes
- Under-eye hollowness
- Uneven skin texture
- Early signs of aging
- Skin that looks thin or worn down
Benefits of PRF Treatment
There are many potential benefits of platelet-rich fibrin treatment, such as:
- Minimally invasive
- No added chemicals
- Low risk of allergic reaction
- Generally suitable for all skin types
- Helps support healthy skin biology
- Requires little to no recovery time
- Can be used on very delicate areas like under the eyes
- Can be used in conjunction with other treatments
What to Expect During Your Appointment
Skin Assessment
Your appointment starts with a skin consultation and an assessment of your skin concerns or goals. This helps determine whether PRF makes sense for your skin and how it may fit into your overall treatment plan.
Blood Draw
Next, a small sample of blood is taken from the inside of your arm, similarly to how a vial of blood is taken for testing at a doctor’s office.
PRF Preparation
After your blood draw, the sample is placed in a centrifuge. This is a machine that spins the blood at a controlled but high speed that separates the platelet-rich fibrin from other components.
Treatment Application
The PRF is then applied to your face topically or gently injected under the skin in target areas. This lets the platelets and growth factors penetrate deeply into the skin and start the process of stimulating collagen and elastin production.
Aftercare
Following your treatment, we’ll go over how to care for your skin at home and what products to use. We may recommend skincare from Dr. Roche’s professional line. Mild redness, swelling, tenderness, or bruising after treatment is common and typically resolves quickly.

Q&A
Is PRF the same as PRP?
No. PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. While PRF and PRP are both blood-based treatments, they are prepared differently and behave uniquely after treatment. PRF has a denser consistency and is designed to stay active in the treatment area over time.
Who is a good candidate for PRF?
PRF is generally suitable for all skin types and tones. It may be a good option for patients who want a natural, minimally invasive approach to skin rejuvenation. It can also be used after other aesthetic treatments like microneedling, which allows for the active ingredients of the PRF to saturate deeper layers of skin.
Is there downtime after PRF?
Most patients can return to their normal routine soon after PRF treatment. The exact downtime depends on how PRF is used and which area is treated. Dr. Roche and our team will explain what to expect before you leave your appointment.
