Micro-Needling – Through the Eye of the Needle to Younger Skin!

Skin micro-needling utilizes what dermatologists and cosmetic physicians have known for decades – that the body responds to a skin wound by creating newer, fresher, plumper skin in its place. Micro-needling devices, such as the DermaPen, create tiny pin hole-sized punctures in the skin to stimulate the body’s wound response: the creation of new collagen and elastin fibers. The skin plumps and thickens, reducing the appearance of scars, fine lines and wrinkles.

Micro-needling can improve new or existing acne or other scars, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, plump lax skin, reduce pore size, and treat stretch marks. Plus, the tiny punctures allow for deep and efficient penetration of skin product treatments. The DermaPen is suitable for all skin types and can be used on any area of the face or body, including the scalp and around the eyes and mouth. It is also one of the most cost-effective acne treatments, with virtually no negative side-effects.  Most people will start to see results after the first session.

Another benefit to the DermaPen is that it creates a channel in which to deliver powerful anti-aging skin products, such as vitamins A and D, right through to the dermis. Because mature skin tends to be less porous, topical anti-aging skin treatments typically only temporarily improve the look of the skin’s surface.  These products are unable to penetrate deeper into the dermis, to create long-lasting change. The DermaPen can bring these restorative products directly to the depth in which they can best benefit the skin. Here at the Elizabeth Roche MD MedSpa, we also offer platelet rich plasma, also known as PRP, to be infused during your treatment, providing a great enhancement of the natural benefits of your own blood.

Although lasers and other ablative procedures can mimic some of the results of the DermaPen, lasers cannot be used by persons with deeper skin tones, who risk permanent skin discoloration known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIHP). Patients who have darker skin tones do not need to be concerned with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation when undergoing micro-needling with Dermapen, as there is not a risk of increased melanin production with the treatment.

The DermaPen’s micro needle design also minimizes pain and bleeding during the procedure, allowing for a more comfortable experience and reduced recovery time, although topical numbing cream application prior to the procedure is an option for more sensitive patients.

Everyone’s skin starts off in a condition uniquely their own, so each person’s skin will respond differently and therefore will require a unique treatment specifically designed to meet their needs, as well as a unique treatment schedule.  I welcome you to meet with me or my expert esthetic staff to discuss how a Dermapen micro-needling treatment can address your skin care concerns.
