Although lasers and other ablative procedures can mimic some of the results of the DermaPen, lasers cannot be used by persons with deeper skin tones, who risk permanent skin discoloration known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIHP). Patients who have darker skin tones do not need to be concerned with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation when undergoing micro-needling with Dermapen, as there is not a risk of increased melanin production with the treatment.
The DermaPen’s micro needle design also minimizes pain and bleeding during the procedure, allowing for a more comfortable experience and reduced recovery time, although topical numbing cream application prior to the procedure is an option for more sensitive patients.
