5 Microneedling Secrets to Know Before Your Procedure

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that can help restore your skin’s look of youth and vitality in a single visit. Celebrities swear by microneedling, the procedure that gives them the Red Carpet Glamorous look.

If you’re exploring the idea of using microneedling to stimulate your body’s own collagen and elastin production to help you get fresher, plumper-looking skin, here are 5 secrets to know before your appointment.

1. Your Skincare Products Will Penetrate More Deeply After Your Microneedling Procedure

Microneedling involves placing tiny puncture wounds in the skin to trigger the body’s natural healing response. When the body sends healing blood cells and nutrients to the area, the skin appears newer and fresher looking.

Microneedling creates small punctures and open channels on your skin surface, therefore you should not use your routine cosmetic skin care products on your skin for the first 24 hours. You don’t want products that have not been proven safe to enter your skin and cause irritation or an infection.During the treatment we will use the channels to deliver products that have been proven safe and effective to create a glowing difference in your skin.  If you’re using quality skincare products that are free of harmful chemicals and loaded with good skin-nourishing ingredients, you will see an amazing difference in the texture and quality of your skin.

2. You May Want to Go Makeup-Free Until Your Skin Has Healed

As a result of microneedling causing your skin to better absorb anything you put on it, you may want to avoid using makeup for twenty-four hours following your procedure. After this time it has been shown, by microscopic examination of the skin, that the holes are closed and makeup can be worn.

3. Your Skin May Feel Itchy as It Heals

As your skin recovers from the tiny punctures caused by the microneedling device, it may feel itchy. This is your body’s important healing mechanisms getting to work; however, this can be extremely uncomfortable and may make you want to scratch your face. Try not to scratch, but use the FDA approved Hyaluronic Serum that I provide for you to use post procedure.

If this does not resolve the itchy feeling, I recommend using a bit of over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to reduce itching and avoiding using hot water when washing your face.

4. You Likely Won’t Have to Take Off From Work

One of the reasons that microneedling procedures are so popular at my MedSpa office is they don’t require much — if any — downtime. Depending on which microneedling procedure you have, you may not have much down time at all. Aquagold, the more gentle microneedling procedure only has one day of flushing whereas SkinPen, the more aggressive deeper microneedling procedure may require two to three days of downtime.  Many of my patients only take the afternoon off work and return to work the next day. Some of my patients go directly back to work after their microneedling procedures. Depending on how deep of a microneedling procedure you recieved, you can resume most of your normal activities.

5. It’s Important to Manage Sun Exposure After Microneedling

Your skin is naturally going to be more sensitive after a microneedling treatment for the same reason that it does a better job of absorbing facial products. Technically, your skin has been injured and is regenerating itself.

During this time, it’s critical that you manage your exposure to the sun. Since sunblock can not be used for the first 24 hours, it’s best to wear a hat, use an umbrella, or stay in shaded areas to keep the sun away from your face. After twenty-four hours it is imperative that you use a broad spectrum sunscreen such as Solar Eclipse. It has a tint to it so it conceals any redness you may have.
