Tighten Facial Skin with a PDO Absorbable Thread Lift

Over time, the skin around the lower third of the face, or the “jowls,” can begin to droop or sag. Many people are unsatisfied with this change in their facial structure. Although Botox and Dermal Fillers can be of great help, sometimes another treatment which actually works by lifting and stimulating collagen is needed. PDO absorbable thread lifts are a new technology that creates instant lifting in a very short amount of time.

What Are PDO Threads?

PDO absorbable threads, sold under the brand name NovaThreads, are actually polydioxanone sutures, similar to those used in cardiothoracic surgery. However these threads have small laser cuts or “barbs” on the sides. The barbed or frayed sides enable the threads to catch onto the tissues under the skin and assist in lifting the overlying skin. The material is highly compatible with the body and is considered one of the safest implantable materials. Your body will metabolize the threads and fully absorb them within 4 to 6 months, however the results will last up to a year.

What is a Thread Lift?

The threads can be inserted into any area of the face at pre-planned points that have been selected to best achieve the patient’s desired results. Straight non-barbed threads can be used in some areas while the larger barbed threads are typically used in the lower face to help in the jowl area. The patient’s skin and facial muscles are numbed and one or more threads are inserted and pulled to create a “lifting” effect that is immediate. Short of a surgical face lift, no other in-office procedure can create the same type of results. Over the course of a year, the skin is healing itself around the threads, creating new collagen that helps keep the skin lifted and firm-looking.

What to Expect During a Thread Lift

A thread lift procedure takes approximately thirty minutes and has little downtime. As with any procedure, any time the skin is entered swelling and bruising are possible. This procedure is often called a “lunchtime procedure,” because it’s entirely possible to schedule a thread lift on your lunch break and return to work an hour later with minimal discomfort or redness.

Thread Lifts for Other Parts of the Body

At the present time, we are using PDO absorbable threads to lift the skin of the face and upper neck. However, because the threads are incredibly safe and the procedure is done quickly with only local anesthetic, the possibilities are truly limitless as to what can be achieved with this new tool.
