In the past, lip augmentation – even when done properly – sometimes gave individuals an “overdone” look. However, with today’s technologically advanced dermal fillers combined with professional application techniques, individuals can achieve the full, natural looking lips they’ve always wanted or restore the youthful lips they once had.
Plump, full lips can help balance facial features and improve self-esteem. Yet over the counter products that claim to give lips a fuller appearance rarely work well, and when they do it’s on a very temporary basis. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, can last between six months to several years depending on the type of filler used.
Naturally Derived Dermal Fillers
Naturally derived dermal fillers can be created from human or animal collagen, which plumps the lips temporarily and is eventually absorbed by the body over a period of less than a year.
Synthetic Dermal Fillers
Synthetically derived dermal fillers tend to last longer because the body cannot absorb the compounds as easily if at all. Semi-permanent fillers tend to last between one and two years, while “permanent” fillers last more than two years. These synthetic fillers are in a class called “hyaluronic acid” fillers and include Juvederm, Voluma, Volbella, Restylane, and Belotero. These dermal fillers are what many physicians use today for treating lips and other areas.
Naturally Derived vs. Synthetic – Which Is Better?
Many patients believe that there is less of a chance of allergic reaction with naturally derived dermal fillers as opposed to synthetic fillers. However, just the opposite is true. The “natural” collagen fillers have caused allergic reactions and require allergic testing of a small amount prior to using it on any area. This entails two separate appointments for first time patients who request a collagen filler.
The chance of having an allergic reaction to any dermal filler is quite low. Collagen dermal fillers are not used as frequently because they tend to have a shorter longevity and they require multiple visits in order to receive the treatment. Here at our office for treatment of the lips we use only the synthetic “hyaluronic acid” fillers such as Juvederm, Voluma, Volbella, Restylane, and Belotero and have never had an allergic reaction problem. With any injection, patients may expect some mild sensitivity, bruising, and swelling. Talk to your doctor or call us to set up a consultation to discuss dermal fillers in depth and to determine if lip augmentation with dermal fillers is right for you.
How to Get Natural Looking Results
What products are used for lip augmentation matter less in achieving a “natural” look than the application technique. To avoid an “overdone” look, it’s important to seek out a physician with proven success in using dermal fillers to create lip augmentation that appears natural.
An experienced physician will correct the bottom lip to extend just slightly beyond the upper lip. The upper lip to be approximately one third of the size of the bottom lip. However, considering the patient’s facial structure and original lip size is key to ensuring that lip augmentation results appear attractive and natural. I have been injecting lips with dermal filler for over ten years creating natural looking lips with great patient satisfaction.
