Many men and women are self-conscious about their chin area, especially if they have extra submental fat deposits, also known as a “double chin.” Unwanted neck fat is typically difficult to target with double chin exercises and in the past, liposuction was generally the go-to procedure for double chin reduction.
Kybella offers a new, non-surgical option for targeting and dissolving fat cells underneath the chin. Here’s your quick, step-by-step guide to this innovative, non-invasive treatment.
What Is Kybella?
Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment for submental fat reduction. It contains a patented formula of pure deoxycholic acid, a molecule naturally found in the body that promotes the breakdown of dietary fat.
By injecting non-animal derived deoxycholic acid directly into the chin area, it begins to directly break down submental fat. This reduces the appearance of a double chin over a period of multiple injections spread out over two to six months. No other cosmetic injectable is approved for the reduction of unwanted neck fat, and Kybella is being used by some physicians off-label to spot-treat hard-to-target pockets of fat in other areas of the face and body. I have had many years experience of using Kybella and I offer off label use of it.
An Alternative to Double Chin Surgery
Chin exercises don’t typically work well to get rid of chin fat, and fat loss must occur in significant amounts throughout the body to reduce the appearance of a double chin via exercise.
Liposuction is a viable option for excess submental fat removal and it is still the preferred option for patients who have a very large amount of submental fullness, however, it is an invasive surgical procedure that sometimes does not turn out completely even and smooth. This is where Kybella can come in handy. After recovery from liposuction, if you are left with unevenness or bumpy results, Kybella can be used for the finishing touch.
Although results take longer to notice with Kybella than with liposuction surgery, it’s a safer alternative to surgical correction that is more comfortable and discreet for the patient. Since results are gradual, they appear more natural and less like you’ve had “work done.”
Is Kybella Right for You?
If you have excess fat underneath your chin that you feel self conscious about, Kybella may be a viable option for natural-looking results that don’t require you to undergo a surgical procedure. Kybella is an extremely safe treatment that is approved for use in a majority of cases, and I can personally consult with you to help you determine if Kybella is right for you.
Preparing for Your Kybella Treatments
Kybella should always be administered by a licensed and experienced physician. At the time of your appointment, we’ll obtain a full health history and discuss any potential contraindications or complications. We’ll discuss your desired outcome and I’ll create a treatment plan designed specifically for your needs.
Your skin will be cleaned and marked after I determine the best placement for the injections. In addition to topical numbing cream, I will gently inject a numbing solution prior to administering Kybella to ensure the process is as comfortable as possible for you.
Following your treatment, little to no downtime is required and you can usually return to normal daily activity right away. Multiple treatments may be necessary over a period of time to achieve your desired results.
Kybella Before and After
Patients typically notice the gradual decrease of submental fat and an increase in chin definition with two to four sessions, spaced approximately a month apart. As many treatments as necessary can be done over time and maximum results are typically seen around four to six weeks following the last injection.
